Kat Calvosa
Vocalist Kat Calvosa has a voice like chocolate. Rich and smooth and filled with joy, listeners will be enchanted with the singular manner in which she approaches her craft.
Having spent the last two years in Miami pursuing her Masters Degree in Jazz Pedagogy, where she had the opportunity to work with such noted musicians as John Secada, Raul Midon, Alex Norris, Rey Sanchez, Lisanne Lyons, and Johnny Rodgers, Ms. Calvosa is thrilled to return to the New York Jazz scene.
Her ability to take what are commonly referred to as new standards, popular songs written in the 1960s and 1970s, and spin them out in a Jazz context is one of her most endearing qualities. Her voice is able to move effortlessly within the nuances of the music, and her skill in interpreting and internalizing lyrics is masterful. Kat is also an accomplished songwriter, and her original music is a blend of Jazz, Folk, and Pop, with a sound evoking modern and traditional influences.
Originally hailing from Wisconsin, Kat began her musical career at Lawrence University where she was a classical voice major under the tutelage of renowned soprano Patrice Michaels-Bedi. While there, Ms. Calvosa developed a love of Jazz music and began working with Ken Schaphorst and D. Bayne until her curiosity and drive drew her to New York City. In the fall of 1996, she began attending the Manhattan School of Music, studying jazz voice with Peter Eldridge of the New York Voices. Shortly after graduation in 1999, Ms. Calvosa began working with Anat Fort, Nick Mancini, Greg Beyer, and Mike Epperhart, and two years later she released her debut CD, It Could Happen. She has worked with such noted artists as Anne Philips, Jackie Presti, Jane Monheit, Travis Sullivan, Art Hirahara, and Sean Nowell, and has played at many New
York venues including The Cornelia Street Café, The Bitter End, and The New Leaf Café. Additionaly you can find her playing summer tours with various groups at venues across the country.
With her return to New York City, Kat formed a new band featuring Nathan Peck on bass, Tobias Gebb on drums, and Andrew Fisher on piano. Performing her original songs, they are currently in the final stages of recording Chrysalis, a new album of original music to be released in the winter of 09.
